Weekend emergency endodontist in Sunnyvale

Most Bay Area endodontists are closed Saturday and Sunday. We aren't. Dr. Jason Kung — UCLA-trained specialist endodontist — sees emergency patients both weekend days, with same-day availability for severe pain, swelling, dental trauma, and post-treatment complications.

Why weekend availability matters

Tooth pain doesn't follow a weekday schedule

Pulp inflammation often peaks 12–48 hours after the trigger — meaning a Friday morning sensitive tooth becomes a Saturday night emergency. Most endodontic offices in the Bay Area are closed Saturday and Sunday, leaving patients to wait until Monday in significant pain.

Faster relief = better outcomes

Once the pulp becomes irreversibly inflamed (irreversible pulpitis), every additional day of delay increases the risk of infection spreading into the surrounding bone. A Saturday root canal stops the progression at the same point a Monday root canal would — but you're not in pain for 48 extra hours.

Avoid the ER for dental pain

Hospital emergency rooms cannot perform root canals. ER visits for tooth pain typically result in antibiotics + opioids and a referral back to a dentist — costing $500–$2,000 with no actual treatment of the source. A weekend appointment with a specialist endodontist treats the cause, not just the symptoms.

In pain right now? Do this.

  1. 1

Call us first — even on weekends

We answer the phone Saturday and Sunday from 9 AM to 3 PM, and Monday–Friday until 7 PM. Most calls are returned within 30 minutes outside those hours.

  2. 2

Take 600 mg ibuprofen if you can

Ibuprofen reduces both pain and pulpal inflammation at once. Avoid heat on the affected side. Cold water or a cold compress can help temporarily.

  3. 3

    Don't wait through the weekend

Patients who try to 'tough it out' often arrive Monday in much worse shape — facial swelling, fever, or systemic infection. We have weekend appointments specifically so this doesn't happen.

Frequently asked questions

Are you actually open on Saturday and Sunday?+

Yes — Silicon Valley Endodontics and Microsurgery is open Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. We are one of the only specialist endodontic offices in the Bay Area open both weekend days. Call (669) 234-2354 to confirm same-day availability.

Do you charge an emergency fee for weekend appointments?+

No. Weekend appointment fees are the same as weekday fees. Emergency root canal treatment is billed at our standard PPO out-of-network rates — typically $1,400–$1,900 depending on tooth complexity, with most PPO plans covering 50–80%.

What if my regular dentist is closed on the weekend?+

We see patients directly without a referral, and we communicate the treatment summary back to your dentist on Monday for any follow-up restoration (crown). No prior authorization is required for emergency endodontic care under California PPO rules.

How fast can I be seen?+

For severe pain or swelling, we typically see weekend patients within 2–4 hours of the call. For non-urgent weekend visits (a recently cracked tooth, mild discomfort), same-day or next-morning appointments are usually available.

What if I need treatment after 3 PM on a weekend?+

Call (669) 234-2354 — Dr. Kung returns after-hours emergency calls personally. For knocked-out (avulsed) teeth, see our dental trauma first-aid guide and call immediately; time is critical (the tooth has the best chance of survival if reimplanted within 30 minutes).

Are you really cheaper than the ER?+

Yes, by a wide margin and with actual treatment. ER visits for dental pain average $1,500–$2,000 nationally and result only in antibiotics and pain medication — the underlying problem is unchanged. A weekend root canal at our office addresses the cause and is typically half the total cost when factoring in the eventual root canal you'd still need.

What happens if I just wait until Monday to be seen?+

For mild discomfort it is often fine to wait. For severe throbbing pain, facial swelling, or fever, waiting is risky — these symptoms indicate active bacterial infection that can spread to adjacent tissues (cellulitis) or, rarely, to deeper neck spaces. The American Association of Endodontists' patient guidance specifically recommends prompt evaluation for severe dental pain or swelling rather than waiting. If you cannot reach us, urgent-care antibiotics buy time but do not resolve the source — definitive treatment is still required.

Can I get the crown placed the same weekend as my root canal?+

Not at our office — endodontists perform the root canal, and your general dentist places the final crown. We seal the tooth with a strong temporary filling at the end of the weekend visit, and the AAE recommends crown placement within 2–4 weeks of root canal completion to prevent fracture or recontamination. We send the treatment record to your general dentist Monday morning so they can schedule your crown appointment.
