No. The dose is tiny, directed at your mouth, and we shield your abdomen and thyroid with a lead apron. ACOG confirms that dental X-rays needed for diagnosis are safe during pregnancy. We still take only the images necessary to treat you safely.

The second trimester (weeks 14–27) is the most comfortable for non-urgent treatment. But an active infection or significant pain should be treated in any trimester — delaying treatment of an infection is riskier than the procedure itself.

What pain medicine can I take while pregnant?

Acetaminophen is the preferred option in pregnancy. Ibuprofen and other NSAIDs are usually avoided, especially in the third trimester. Always confirm any medication with your OB, and tell us you're pregnant so we prescribe accordingly.

Yes. Lidocaine, the standard dental local anesthetic, is routinely used and considered safe in pregnancy. Being properly numb also reduces stress, which is good for both you and your baby. We tailor the type and amount to your stage of pregnancy.

Should I just wait until after I give birth?

Not for an infection or active pain — those should be treated promptly because an untreated infection is a greater risk than the treatment. A truly elective, asymptomatic procedure could sometimes wait, but most teeth needing a root canal shouldn't be left untreated for months.
