Verified reviews from patients across Sunnyvale, Cupertino, Mountain View, Palo Alto, and the greater South Bay. Every review below is a real patient experience — see the verification cards in the next section to read the full review on Google, Healthgrades, or Yelp.

I was referred to Dr. Kung at Silicon Valley Endodontics and Microsurgery in Sunnyvale for a complex root canal problem and possible endodontic microsurgery. I was nervous, but Dr. Kung explained the diagnosis and treatment options clearly. The office felt very specialized, with advanced 3D imaging, microscope-based treatment, and a very precise approach. I appreciated the calm environment, attention to detail, and focus on saving the tooth. I would highly recommend this office for anyone needing expert root canal treatment, retreatment, or endodontic microsurgery in the South Bay.

I needed an emergency root canal in Sunnyvale and contacted Silicon Valley Endodontics & Microsurgery. They were able to see me same-day/next-day when I was in significant pain. Dr. Jason Kung was calm and thorough, explained what was happening clearly, and made the process feel straightforward. They used CBCT to confirm the diagnosis, which gave me confidence in the plan. Billing/fees were explained clearly before treatment. I had severe tooth pain and couldn't sleep — I could sleep that night. I felt comfortable the entire time — professional, efficient, and compassionate team. If you're in the South Bay and need a root canal specialist/endodontist, I highly recommend them

Response from Dr. Jason Kung

Thank you, Dan — really appreciate you taking the time to write this out in detail. Same-day and next-day emergency root canal slots in Sunnyvale are exactly what we hold our schedule open for, because severe tooth pain that keeps you awake shouldn't wait two or three weeks for a specialist appointment. That gap — between acute pain and when a typical endodontist can see you — is one of the reasons we structure the practice the way we do. On the CBCT: for emergencies especially, I'd rather spend an extra ten minutes confirming the diagnosis in 3D than commit you to a treatment plan built on a 2D X-ray. Missed canals, vertical root fractures, and previously-treated teeth that need retreatment versus apicoectomy all look very different on a CBCT scan than on a standard periapical — and that's often the difference between a root canal that lasts and one that doesn't. Thank you also for noting the billing conversation. Transparent fees up front matter, especially when someone is deciding between saving a tooth and an extraction under the stress of acute pain. We try to have that conversation before anesthetic is on the tray, not after. Wishing you a smooth, fully-healed tooth, and please don't hesitate to reach out if anything comes up.

Our Technology

We invest in the best available instruments because precision equipment directly translates into better outcomes for patients.

Surgical Microscope

Carl Zeiss OPMI

The Carl Zeiss OPMI is the gold standard in endodontic operating microscopes. Its coaxial illumination and variable magnification allow Dr. Kung to see details invisible to the naked eye: extra canals, hairline cracks, and subtle anatomical variations that determine treatment success. The attached camera also lets patients see exactly what Dr. Kung sees during their visit.

J. Morita Veraview X800 cone beam CT imaging unit in our Sunnyvale endodontic suite

3D Cone Beam CT Imaging

J. Morita Veraview X800

The J. Morita Veraview X800 is widely regarded as the leading dental CBCT for endodontics. Dr. Kung scans in the unit's high-resolution Endo Mode — an 80 µm voxel size at a 40 × 40 mm limited field of view focused on a single tooth or sextant — which is the small-volume, high-resolution protocol the AAE/AAOMR Joint Position Statement on CBCT in Endodontics (2015) and the European Society of Endodontology Position Statement (Patel et al., IEJ 2019) both recommend for endodontic diagnosis. The result: a true 3D map of the tooth, roots, surrounding bone, and adjacent anatomy at a fraction of the radiation of a medical CT — and a confident diagnosis before a single instrument touches the tooth.

Our Philosophy

At Silicon Valley Endodontics and Microsurgery, we believe that saving your natural teeth should always be the priority. Nothing looks, feels, or functions quite like your own tooth.

We understand that the phrase "root canal" can cause anxiety. Our entire practice is built around changing that experience. From the moment you walk in to the completion of your treatment, your comfort is our primary concern.

By combining advanced local anesthesia techniques with the Zeiss OPMI Pico surgical microscope and J. Morita 3D CBCT imaging, we provide treatments that are precise, thorough, and as comfortable as possible.

Patient questions for Dr. Kung

The questions we hear most often during initial consultations.

What is Dr. Jason Kung's education and training?+

Dr. Jason C. Kung earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He then completed a Master of Science (MS) and Certificate in Endodontics at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). He also completed hospital-based dental and trauma training at St. Barnabas Hospital, a Level 1 Trauma Center in the Bronx, New York.

Is Dr. Kung a specialist endodontist?+

Yes. Dr. Kung is a specialist endodontist — a dentist who completed two additional years of advanced residency training exclusively focused on root canal treatment, endodontic microsurgery, and dental pulp diagnosis. He is an active member of the American Association of Endodontists (AAE).

How competitive is endodontic residency?+

Highly competitive. Per the American Dental Association Health Policy Institute Survey of Advanced Dental Education 2024-25 (CODA data), US endodontic programs received an average of 164 applications per program in 2024-25 (up from 60 in 2014-15 — nearly a 3× increase) while admitting only 233 first-year residents nationwide that year. There were 490 endodontic residents enrolled across all program years and 222 graduated in 2024-25. (The ADA notes the per-program applications ratio counts an applicant once at each program he or she applies to, so the headline ratio overstates unique applicants.) A peer-reviewed survey of program directors in the Journal of Endodontics (Bell et al., 2014) described how programs evaluate candidates — weighing dental-school class rank, National Board scores, prior clinical and research experience, and letters of recommendation. Dr. Kung was selected for the endodontic residency at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), one of the long-established programs in the western United States.

What languages does Dr. Kung speak?+

Dr. Kung practices in English and Mandarin Chinese. The practice website is also available in Spanish, Farsi, Hindi, Korean, Vietnamese, and Traditional and Simplified Chinese.

Are you open on weekends?+

Yes. Silicon Valley Endodontics is open Saturday and Sunday from 9 AM to 3 PM. We're one of the only specialist endodontic offices in the South Bay with full weekend hours, including for emergency root canals, dental abscesses, and post-treatment complications.

Are you in-network with my insurance?+

We are an out-of-network PPO provider. We accept all PPO plans and our office files claims on your behalf — most patients with PPO insurance receive 50–80% coverage for endodontic procedures. We provide a written treatment estimate before any work begins so there are no billing surprises. We do not accept HMO, DHMO, or Medi-Cal/Denti-Cal plans.

Will you give an honest second opinion?+

Yes — and we're routinely asked for them. About one in five patients we see is coming for a second opinion before agreeing to a root canal, retreatment, or extraction. We'll review your records and imaging, do our own diagnostic exam, and tell you honestly whether we agree with the original recommendation. If we don't think you need the procedure, we'll say so.

Do you treat children?+

Dr. Kung treats endodontic problems in patients of all ages, including children with both baby (primary) and permanent teeth. Common pediatric referrals include traumatic dental injuries (knocked-out, displaced, or fractured teeth) and pulp therapy for teeth with deep cavities or abscesses. Parents are welcome in the treatment room.

Do you offer Mandarin-speaking appointments for older family members?+

Yes. Dr. Kung practices fluently in both English and Mandarin Chinese, which often matters for older relatives or family members who prefer to discuss medical decisions in their native language. The practice website is also available in 8 languages including Simplified and Traditional Chinese.

Has Dr. Kung published any research?+

Yes. Dr. Kung is a first author on peer-reviewed publications in the Journal of Endodontics (2015) and The Open Dentistry Journal (2010), and a co-author in Bioinformation (2012). His publications are indexed in PubMed (PMIDs: 26293174, 23055612, 21088686).
