Root Canal Treatment

What is a Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment is a dental procedure used to treat infected tooth pulp. The pulp is the soft tissue core of the tooth which contains nerves, blood supply and connective tissue necessary for tooth health. This is usually caused when bacteria enters the pulp through a deep cavity or failed filling.

Symptoms

  • Persistent toothache
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold
  • Swollen gums
  • Pain when eating or biting down

What happens during a Root Canal?

  • An Endodontist begins the procedure by numbing around the tooth.
  • The Endodontist then drill a hole into the tooth.
  • The endodontists removes the infected or inflamed area, carefully clean and shape the root canals.
  • Next, Gutta-Percha is placed into the canals with a sealer to ensure complete sealing.
  • There is a temporary filling placed after or a permanent filling.
  • Afterward, you will return to your general dentist for crown and other restorations to protect the tooth.

Does a Root Canal Treatment hurt?

A Root Canal Treatment may sound spine-chilling, but there is little to no pain. The patient will always be numb before a procedure. This allows for the patient to feel comfortable during the procedure.

What is a Root Canal Retreatment?

A Retreatment is almost identical to the original procedure.  When a retreatment is needed it means the tooth may have not healed properly and remains infected. An  Endodontist then goes back into the tooth and cleans out the canals. Sometimes retirement procedures are done in two visits.
