Pricing by tooth type

Cost varies primarily by which tooth is being treated — a front tooth has one canal and is faster to treat; a molar has three or four canals and takes considerably longer. The ranges below are typical for our practice in 2026.

Anterior tooth (1 canal)
Front tooth — incisor or canine.
$200 – $500$900 – $1,200

Molar (3–4 canals)
Back tooth — first, second, or third molar.
$300 – $700$1,200 – $1,700
Root canal retreatment
Re-treatment of a previously root-canaled tooth.
$400 – $900$1,400 – $1,900

What's included

The fee covers the diagnostic exam, periapical x-rays, CBCT 3D imaging when warranted, local anesthesia, the root canal procedure performed under the surgical operating microscope, and a temporary filling. The permanent restoration (a crown for posterior teeth) is placed by your general dentist a few weeks later and is billed separately.
Insurance & payment

How insurance works at our practice

We are an out-of-network specialty practice. That phrase often confuses patients, so here's what it actually means:

  • PPO plans cover us. Most PPO plans cover specialty endodontic care at a percentage of usual and customary rates regardless of in-network status.
  • We verify your benefits up front. Before your appointment we contact your insurance to confirm endodontic coverage, your annual maximum, deductible, and applicable percentage. The estimate you see is what you'll actually pay.
  • We file the claim for you. No claim paperwork on your end. The insurance reimbursement is sent to you directly (or assigned to us, your choice).
  • DHMO plans are not accepted. If you have a dental HMO that requires a referral and assignment to a contracted provider, you'll likely need to see an in-network provider for full coverage.

Payment options

Ways to pay

  • All major credit cards — Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover.
  • HSA / FSA — root canal treatment is a qualifying medical expense.
  • CareCredit financing — multiple promotional terms including no-interest options for qualifying balances.
  • Cash, check, ACH — for patients who prefer to pay directly.

What affects the cost of a root canal

  • Which tooth. Anterior teeth have one canal; premolars have one or two; molars have three or four. More canals means more chair time and more fee.
  • Anatomy complexity. Calcified canals, sharp curvatures, or accessory anatomy may require additional ultrasonic instrumentation and CBCT imaging.
  • Whether it's a retreatment. Re-doing a previously treated root canal is more involved than initial therapy — the existing filling material has to be removed before new treatment can begin.
  • Whether CBCT is needed. Three-dimensional imaging is included when clinically warranted (e.g. unclear anatomy, suspected fracture, or surgical planning) and is itemized on the estimate.
  • Your insurance plan. Annual maximum, deductible status, and percentage covered for major services determine your out-of-pocket portion.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a root canal cost in Sunnyvale?

Cost depends on the tooth and the number of canals. With PPO insurance, out-of-pocket cost for a single root canal is typically $200–$700. Without insurance, treatment ranges from $900 (anterior) to $1,700 (complex molar). Retreatment of a previously root-canaled tooth is more involved and runs $400–$1,900 depending on insurance. We provide a written estimate before any treatment is scheduled.

Do you accept insurance?

We are an out-of-network specialty practice and accept most PPO insurance plans. Out-of-network does not mean out-of-pocket — most PPO plans cover specialty endodontic care at a percentage of usual and customary rates, and we file the insurance claim on your behalf. We verify your specific benefits before your appointment so the estimate you see is the cost you'll actually pay.

What does the cost include?

The fee includes diagnostic exam, periapical x-rays, CBCT 3D imaging when warranted, local anesthesia, the root canal procedure itself performed under the surgical operating microscope, and a temporary filling. The fee does NOT include the permanent restoration (typically a crown for posterior teeth), which is placed by your general dentist within a few weeks of treatment.

Are there payment plans?

Yes. We accept all major credit cards, HSA/FSA, and offer financing through CareCredit with multiple promotional terms (including no-interest options for qualifying balances). The financial coordinator will walk through options at your visit.

Why does a specialist endodontist cost more than other estimates I've received?

Specialty endodontic practices invest in dedicated equipment that is essential for predictable outcomes — surgical operating microscopes, CBCT 3D imaging, dedicated endodontic instrumentation. The fee reflects that equipment, the cost of a clinician with 2–3 years of additional residency training, and the longer chair time required to perform the procedure thoroughly. Outcomes data from peer-reviewed studies consistently shows higher long-term success rates for endodontically-treated teeth performed by specialists.

What if I can't afford treatment right now?

Call us anyway. If full root canal treatment isn't immediately feasible, we can often perform a pulpotomy (removing the inflamed pulp from the crown of the tooth) to relieve pain and stabilize the tooth for a few weeks while you arrange financing or schedule the full procedure. Untreated dental infection does not improve on its own — it gets worse and more expensive.

Is a root canal cheaper than a dental implant?

Almost always, yes. A root canal + crown in Sunnyvale typically runs $2,400–$3,400 out-of-pocket combined, while a single-tooth implant + crown ranges $5,500–$7,500 (implant fixture, abutment, crown, and any bone graft). The American Association of Endodontists' patient education ("Save Your Natural Tooth") recommends endodontic treatment first whenever the tooth is restorable — natural teeth preserve the periodontal ligament that lets you sense bite forces, which an implant cannot replicate.

How much is a root canal without insurance in Sunnyvale?

Our cash-pay fees (no insurance) are: anterior (front) tooth $1,250, premolar $1,500, molar $1,800–$1,950. The build-up filling that goes on top after the root canal adds about $250–$350, and the crown from your general dentist is typically $1,400–$1,800 additional. We offer a 5% courtesy discount for prepayment in full at the visit, and CareCredit 6-month no-interest financing is accepted.

Why does a molar root canal cost more than a front-tooth root canal?

Molars commonly have 3–4 separate canals (and the upper-first molar frequently has a fourth — the MB2 — per the AAE Glossary of Endodontic Terms); front teeth have just one. Each additional canal requires its own shaping, disinfection, and obturation under the microscope, roughly doubling the chairside time versus a front tooth. ADA fee codes price the procedure by canal count for this reason — D3310 (anterior) is significantly less than D3330 (molar). Success rates are comparable when treated properly; it is the time and complexity that drive the fee.
