How root canal coverage usually works
On a typical PPO plan, a root canal falls under "basic" or "major" services and is reimbursed at a percentage after you've met your annual deductible. Common ranges:
- Coverage level: often 50–80% of the allowed amount for the root canal itself.
- Deductible: usually $50–$150 per year before coverage kicks in.
- Annual maximum: most plans cap total benefits at $1,000–$2,000 per year — a root canal plus crown can approach or exceed that cap.
- The crown is separate. The crown that protects the tooth afterward is billed by your general dentist and counts against the same annual maximum.
Does it matter that we're a specialist?
Generally no. Insurance pays based on the procedure code (for example, the code for a molar root canal), not on whether a general dentist or a specialist endodontist performs it. You're typically covered the same either way — but you get the specialist's microscope, 3D imaging, and experience for the same covered procedure.
In-network vs out-of-network
If we're in-network with your PPO, you pay the negotiated rate and we bill the insurer directly. If we're out-of-network, most PPO plans still provide benefits — often at a slightly lower percentage — and we'll submit the claim for you and apply your benefits to your bill. We'll tell you exactly where you stand before treatment.
What's usually not covered
- HMO/DMO plans may require a referral or limit you to assigned providers — check before booking.
- Costs above your annual maximum once you've used up the year's benefit.
- Retreatment may have waiting periods or frequency limits on some plans.
We make the money part easy
Before you commit, we verify your benefits, estimate your out-of-pocket cost, and explain it plainly. We accept most PPO plans, submit claims on your behalf, and offer CareCredit financing for the balance. Related questions
How much will I pay for a root canal with insurance?+
It varies by plan, but with a typical PPO covering 50–80% after the deductible, your out-of-pocket on a molar root canal is often a few hundred dollars — more if you've used part of your annual maximum or need a crown too. We'll verify your benefits and give you a specific estimate before treatment.
Does insurance cover the crown after the root canal?+
Usually partially, but the crown is billed separately by your general dentist and counts against the same annual maximum as the root canal. Because a root canal plus crown can approach the yearly cap, some patients split them across two benefit years to maximize coverage.
Are endodontists covered the same as general dentists?+
Generally yes. Insurance pays based on the procedure code, not the provider's specialty, so a root canal is typically covered the same whether a general dentist or a specialist endodontist performs it — you just get specialist-level care for the same benefit.
What if you're out-of-network with my plan?+
Most PPO plans still pay out-of-network benefits, often at a slightly lower percentage. We submit the claim for you and apply your benefits to your bill, so you're not paying full price out of pocket. We'll tell you your estimated cost before any treatment.
Do you offer payment plans?+
Yes. We accept CareCredit, which offers interest-free and extended financing options for dental care, and we'll work with you on the balance after insurance. Just ask when you call and we'll explain the options.
