Most endodontic offices around Palo Alto and Stanford close Friday evening and don't reopen until Monday. We don't. Dr. Jason Kung — UCLA-trained specialist endodontist — sees Palo Alto patients both Saturday and Sunday, 22 minutes south via I-280, for severe tooth pain, swelling, dental trauma, and post-treatment complications.
8 AM – 3 PM, every weekend. Specialist endodontist on site — same fees as a weekday visit.
I-280 S to Saratoga-Sunnyvale Rd, or El Camino S. Free on-site parking at 1565 Hollenbeck Ave.
Practice limited entirely to endodontics. Microscope and CBCT on every case — including weekends.
Weekend endodontic availability is genuinely limited on the Peninsula — most offices around Palo Alto, Menlo Park, and Mountain View are Monday–Friday only. Silicon Valley Endodontics in Sunnyvale (about 22 minutes south via I-280 or El Camino) is open every Saturday and Sunday, 8 AM – 3 PM, with a specialist endodontist on site. Call (669) 234-2354 first to confirm same-day availability.
Saturday morning traffic is significantly lighter than weekday peak. Door-to-door from downtown Palo Alto, Stanford, or Town & Country Village runs 18–22 minutes via I-280 S to Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road. From east Palo Alto/Stanford Research Park, US-101 S to Mathilda Avenue is about 20 minutes off-peak.
Weekend emergency root canal treatment is billed on the same terms as a weekday visit — most major PPO plans, including the carriers offered through Stanford's benefits program, cover 50–80% as a standard benefit. There is no separate weekend surcharge at our office. Bring your insurance card and we will verify benefits before treatment.
No prior authorization or referral is required for emergency endodontic care under California PPO rules. We see Palo Alto patients directly Saturday and Sunday, treat the source of the pain, and send a complete diagnostic + treatment summary (including CBCT findings) to your general dentist on Monday morning so they can place the final crown.
The Stanford ER (or any hospital ER) is the right call if there is spreading facial swelling toward the eye or down the neck, a fever above 101°F, trouble swallowing, or trouble breathing — those are signs the infection has moved beyond the tooth. For severe tooth pain alone, an ER will only give you antibiotics and pain medication, then refer you back to an endodontist. Going straight to our weekend chair gets the source treated in one visit.
If it is safe for you, an over-the-counter NSAID such as ibuprofen or naproxen may temporarily help; follow the package directions and do not combine NSAIDs. Acetaminophen may be an option when NSAIDs are not appropriate. Sleep with your head elevated on two pillows — lying flat raises pulp-chamber pressure and worsens throbbing. Cold compress, not heat. Don't chew on that side. Call us first thing Saturday at 8 AM — same-day slots fill quickly.
